June Games

June accidently became a very spendy month, but there was lots of gaming and even a completion.

Games completed this month

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Xbox Series X

So after last month, I did manage to go on and roll credits on this. Loads of post-game I could still do, but I was ready to move on for now. I was still struggling with The Paintress and in danger of abandoning the game altogether in favour of my new toy (spoiler) so I dropped the difficulty down to story mode for the remainder of the game. It’s a fantastic game, and if I don’t come back to do the extra stuff off my own back, I almost certainly will if they drop an expansion.

Games played during June

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2

Very much back on this one now. Another year of comedy timing where I didn’t play in March / April so I still can’t catch a spider crab, the only sea creature I’m missing. Chipping away at collecting the art for the museum though. Mostly I’m waiting for Nintendo to announce a new Animal Crossing.

Mario Kart World – Nintendo Switch 2

Yes, I got on board for day one (as below) and this game is mostly as good as they say. I don’t really like the open world stuff, which is broadly invisible anyway, but the weird driving between courses counting as laps of the race is odd. It’s generally great fun to play though so hopefully we’ll get some improvement via patch as it goes on.

Split Fiction – Xbox Series X

I picked this up as now I’ve moved in with my partner and things are settling down, we were ready for something new to play together. Split Fiction is superb, a worthy follow-up to It Takes Two. I’d assume we’re about half way through but not really sure.

Monster Train 2 – PC GamePass

I have played a little bit more of this, but it’s not really sticking. I’ll be surprised if I complete a run before this gets retired.

June Pickups

Orb Tower – SteamDeck

I’ve had my eye on this for a bit, as the premise of a roguelike Puzzle Bobble game was very appealing. Thanks to a sale and steam credit from the weird gift card things, I managed to get it for 22p. I completed one run on it, and it is really good fun, but unfortunately you can only aim with the mouse, which restricts you to the track pads on the SteamDeck. This feels clunky and sadly means I’m unlikely to stick with it.

Orbital Bullet – SteamDeck

Kind of broke my commitment to only buy games I’m going to immediately play, as I’ve picked it up and not touched it yet. However it was only £1 so not going to worry about it too much.

Nintendo Switch 2 with Mario Kart World

Despite talking myself out of pre-ordering the console, and mostly being convinced I didn’t need one, I do find myself owning a Nintendo Switch 2. I had decided I’d get one later when the hype had died down and they were readily available. Then I was thinking about a future Animal Crossing game and how we’ll need two consoles once that appears, and obviously it’s more sensible to spread that purchase and buy one sooner, and the next one when Animal Crossing comes out… Next thing I know, it’s Switch 2 launch day, a friend mentions Argos have day one stock available. I had a quick look online at my local store, and had one delivered by the end of the day. Oops.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD – Nintendo Switch 2

While I did bounce off the original version of this on the 3DS (for more on why, see my JRPG post) I am interested to give it another go. Mostly because of how much I enjoyed Bravely Default 2 and the two Octopath Traveller games which use the same Brave/Default system of gameplay. After finishing Clair Obscur I’m ready for a new JRPG on my new console. I was deciding between this and the Suikoden 1 & 2 remaster, and decided on Bravely Default as it’s exclusive to the console and Suikoden is on other platforms (and could even turn up on GamePass). It also didn’t hurt that it was only £33 brand new for the physical ‘Game Keycard’ release, which I’ll be able to resell if I end up hating it.

Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition – Xbox Series X

As usual with these big fighting games, I like to wait until there is an edition that collects all the DLC characters for less than £20 total. I managed to get a key for this one for £17. I don’t think it’s as good as MK X or MK 11, but it’s fun enough. I’ll play through the story content and occasionally beat up my friends as Conan the Barbarian.

December Games

December Games

Unsurprisingly no completions, but did manage to play a little and picked up a couple of things.

Games played during December

Renfield - November Games

Renfield – PC

I think this might have been the only game I played single player during December, but I am having a blast with it. I was sure when I picked it up that it was a twin-stick shooter ala Robotron, however it’s actually another Vampire Survivors clone. Playing it though, it’s easily the best looking of the clones and the most fun I’ve had with one since the original game.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - December Games

Mario Kart 8 – Nintendo Switch

Of course we went into the Christmas period, so this and the next three games were all about multiplayer with the family. I really enjoyed getting to play the courses from the booster pass with everyone, but sadly I just don’t play enough Mario Kart to be competitive in this company. My nephew has it sewn up, and I can sometimes challenge for third place with my niece and brother-in-law.

Worms W.M.D. - December Games

Worms W.M.D. – Nintendo Switch

A much more evenly matched multiplayer game, although I do think I had the edge when we were playing with my rule set. A coincidence I’m sure.

Super Bomberman R - December Games

Super Bomberman R – Nintendo Switch

Finally, the legend lives on. I did at least manage the clean sweep on Bomberman, so I could retain my title. Playing Bomberman R though just reminds me of the complete misstep that was Super Bomberman R 2, and the absolute loss of Bomberman Live. Given that Battlefest on the 360 live arcade managed to be backwards compatible on the Xbox One and Series S/X, there seems to be no good reason why the previous live arcade title couldn’t be too. Except the cynical one, that is Bomberman Live was perfect, and if that still worked we wouldn’t need to buy any more games.

December pick ups

The Knight Witch - Xbox Series X

The Knight Witch – Xbox Series X

I’ve had this one on my wishlist for a while on multiple formats, was just waiting for a sale on one of them to decide where I would buy it. In December it had 50% off on Xbox so I grabbed it there. I haven’t played it yet, but it’s supposed to be a twin-stick shooter style metroidvania. Both genres I love, so optimistic I’ll enjoy myself.

Pinball M - PC

Pinball M Tables – PC

Buying up pinball tables continues. The end of November saw the launch of Pinball M, with some initial discounts on some of the tables. Some of the horror IP are not really my scene but I did grab the free one and a couple of others. Duke Nukem’s Big Shot Pinball for the videogame nostalgia, and The Thing Pinball because that movie is a classic. Just need to find some time to play them.

Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting - Xbox Series X

Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC – Xbox Series X

It was obvious I was going to pick this up, at this point any Vampire Survivors DLC is an instant purchase. This one is a crossover with the incredibly popular “Among Us” game, that I’ve neither played or know anything about. However, it’s the same fun so I’m going to play it anyway. Slightly disappointed that this time round it doesn’t have achievements, but there are in game unlocks still to track my progress.

November Games

November Games

Almost forgot about this altogether. Mostly because I didn’t play much during November. Ticked off a couple of completions that sort of count though.

Games completed this month

Quake 2021 - September Games

Quake: Scourge of Armagon – Xbox Series X

First of the expansion packs finished, that was good fun. I think I might have done the first part before but the rest of it felt new.

Mario Kart 8 Booster

Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Pass – Nintendo Switch

Well the last pack from the course pass came out, so as usual I played through and won the new cups. Having now finished all the additional cups, the game rolled credits, so I’m counting that a win. I noticed on “How Long to Beat?” that other people had recorded each pack separately but that seems a bit much.

Games played during November

Octopath Traveler II - November Games

Octopath Traveler 2 – PlayStation 5

Made a lot of progress on this, into the finale and mopping up side content. Although December looks very busy so I might not get it done this side of Christmas. We’ll see.

PC VR Headset

Some random PC VR stuff

After installing the new CPU for my computer I bought last month, I have been playing around with my VR headset again. Haven’t spent a lot of time with any particular games, I’ve mostly just been enjoying trying things. At some point I do need to play Half Life Alyx though since I picked that up a while back.

Arcade

What’s been on the arcade?

The Neo Geo kick continued, I’ve played more Soccer Brawl and a bit of Ghost Pilots. I’ve started spending more time thinking about the upcoming upgrade to my Raspberry Pi5 in there though now, and wondering if there is anything else I want to change with it.

November pick ups

Raspberry Pi5 8GB

Raspberry Pi5

This arrived by the end of the month, I still need to order a power supply and cooler but in the new year I should get those, then get this setup and installed into my MAME cabinet too.

Star Trek TNG - Pinball FX

More Pinball FX Tables – PC & PS5

Much like Addams Family last month, I grabbed Star Trek: The Next Generation (on both PC and PS5 in the sale) along with the PC versions of Snoopy & Twilight Zone tables and a couple of collections that I already had on FX3 that were cheap to add to FX.

Renfield - November Games

Renfield – PC

This just looked like a fun twin-stick shooter based on the Nicolas Cage film. I really enjoyed the movie so figured I’d give it a go.
